In our present culture of Legal Compensation PAT Testing forms a very important part of Health and Safety Compliance. There are insurance companies who will insist on regular PAT Testing as a means of reducing insurance risk from electrical fire harzard and also companies that will not allow external contractors on site without an up to date PAT certificate ( Hospitals etc.).
The Electricity at Work Act regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and those who are self employed to comply with the regulations and take all practicable steps to ensure that no accidents result from the use of electrical equipment. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations also state that the equipment must be safe and fit for purpose.
